Teenage Girl Caught Driving 118 mph

Girl Said She Wanted To Get To School, But Was Actually Drunk

Police caught a 17-year-old girl driving down the expressway through Northwest Indiana at 118 mph, and when they pulled her over she claimed she only wanted to get to school on time.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Wanda Clay was checking traffic on southbound Interstate 65 a mile north of Merrillville's 61st Avenue, when she clocked the 2000 Toyota Celica traveling 118 mph in the left lane. The speed limit on the expressway is 55.

The Toyota was weaving in and out of traffic and between lanes without signaling, police said.

Clay pulled over the vehicle around U.S. 30, and found four teenagers inside, police said. The 17-year-old female driver said she had just dropped a friend off and wanted to get home so they could get to school, state police said.

Clay smelled alcohol, but the driver said they had not been drinking and only planned to go home and then get to school. But it turned out the driver was above the legal limit for blood alcohol.

The girl refused to take a certified breath test and was arrested and taken to a juvenile detention facility for refusing a drunken driving test and several traffic violations. Three male passengers, two of them 17 and a third 16, also tested positive for alcohol in a portable breath test. They were ticketed for underage drinking and released to their parents.

All four teens attended Crown Point public schools.
